Dorothy Must Die Book Review

180530601Title: Dorothy Must Die
Author: Danielle Paige

Blurb (GR): I didn’t ask for any of this. I didn’t ask to be some kind of hero.

But when your whole life gets swept up by a tornado – taking you with it – you have no choice but to go along, you know?

Sure, I’ve read the books. I’ve seen the movies. I know the song about the rainbow and the happy little bluebirds. But I never expected Oz to look like this. To be a place where Good Witches can’t be trusted, Wicked Witches may just be the good guys, and winged monkeys can be executed for acts of rebellion. There’s still a yellow brick road – but even that’s crumbling.

What happened? Dorothy.

They say she found a way to come back to Oz. They say she seized power and the power went to her head. And now no one is safe.

My name is Amy Gumm – and I’m the other girl from Kansas.

I’ve been recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked.

I’ve been trained to fight.

And I have a mission.

Amy Gumm has a messed up life, her father left her, and her mom for a new woman, her mom started relying on Amy, instead of Amy relying on her mom. And she is a laughing stock at school. And then a tornado comes and takes her to another world. Literally.

Amy gets transported to the wonderful world of Oz. Except it’s not so wonderful. Everything is upside down in Oz. The good is bad, and the bad is good. And Dorothy somehow came in again, and became the evil queen. After being rescued, by the Order (a rebel movement against the evil Queen Dorothy) Amy now finds herself with a mission. A mission to kill Dorothy.

This was the best book ever! And I am a very picky person when it comes to books. The plot was just amazing, and the author is just ruthless, and awesome.

To start of with the main character Amy Gumm was such a delight. She was one of those characters that are flawed, quirky, kick-butt type of girl. And most importantly interesting. Amy stayed interesting throughout the book, and went through major character development. Before, she didn’t know hot to swat a fly, now if you need a lethal death machine call Amy. But the most feature, I liked about her was her compassion, and her way with dealing with things. Even if she is wanted by the Tin Man’s deadly Tin soldiers, she still cares for others. She is also funny, and comedic which will keep you entertained, during the story.

The plot was another thing that made this book amazing. It draws you in from the start, and just when things get predictable, BAM plot twist! The plot twists were amazing! Did not see them coming. The author didn’t go extreme with the plot twists, and they weren’t absurd either.

The author was very low-key on the romance, which was a little cliché, but there were a lot more action than romance. I was actually disappointed because I wanted more Nox-Amy scenes.

I also love the fact that the author is not afraid to be ruthless. She killed off characters in the beginning of this book without hesitation. It was great.

The voice of Amy Gumm was comedic, deadly, and just plain wonderful. You could tell that it was a 16 year old girl telling the story, and not an author.
