I have never been so let down  by a book. I was expecting a YA mystery/thriller, and instead I got a really screwed-up story, about a very insane girl trying to find her way in the world. The blurb doesn’t begin to describe how weird this story it. It had so much potential to be a great book.

 

Hawthorn Creely – In the blurb Hawthorn is described a “teenage misfit”. It should be replaced with “Insane obnoxious girl”. Hawthorn gets on my nerves. I couldn’t really connect with her, mostly because of her way thinking. I describe as insane, and obnoxious, because she has this really crazy theory, about Lizzie Lovett being a werewolf. And she actually does research, and goes to find her with Lizzie’s boyfriend, Enzo. Think about how immature that is for a 17 year old. Even if she is an oddball, you think she would have common sense. She’s obnoxious because she tries to make everything about her, and when it’s not she whines about it like a tiny baby. And she complains so much about how the world is so boring.  

If the author was going for eccentricity, she completely failing. Hawthorn was the worst character in this book, and honestly I didn’t want to hear her anymore. I almost DNF’ed this thing, but I had to keep going.

Erzo –  I seriously consider Erzo as a pedophile. He as the older one by 8 years, shouldn’t have taken advantage of Hawthorn. I mean as much as I disliked Hawthorn, that is messed up. Erzo impacted Hawthorns life in a way, I feel like no body in the book could. I hated Erzo throughout the book. I couldn’t really see the chemistry between these two.

 

Lizzie Lovett was a really popular girl at school, whom everyone just loved and envied, including Hawthorn. So when she went missing after a camping trip with her boyfriend, it was a big shock to everyone. Many people had their own theories about what happened to Lizzie. But Hawthorn thinks that Lizzie was a werewolf. And with Lizzie’s old boyfriend, she searches for Lizzie. Along the way Hawthorn goes through life-impacting decisions.

By page 150, I was getting tired of the whole werewolf theory. By page 250 I was practically yelling at Hawthorn to grow up. The story dragged on for so long, filled with so much unnecessary  details, and explanations. The werewolf thing didn’t even work out for Hwthorn because Lizzie Lovett killed herself anyway. Hawthorn tried to use, so she doesn’t have to escape her very own weird world.

 

Maybe the only thing great about this book is the voice. The author did a really good job writing the book as a teenager’s voice. The author also made Hawthorn sound genuine, and not like a robot.
